Recently, the Shoalhaven council announced that it will include a provision in its draft local environment plan that would allow wind farms to be built at certain sites in the region. Under the draft plan, it will be possible to use two types of rural zoned land, RU1 and RU2, for wind farms, subject to planning approval.
Deputy Mayor Gareth Ward says this provision gives the council the power to decide where it is appropriate to site wind farms.
Looking at the zoning map for Shoalhaven Heads (view it here) we are surrounded by both these zones and with the energy requirements of the likes of Manildra - which will only grow over the coming years - the area may well be considered as having possible wind farm sites. If the winds we’ve had over the last few days is anything to go by, I’d say we were a prime contender!
Apparently, residents living even 1-2kms from wind turbines have had their lives ruined by the constant noise from these things and the evidence is that in fact, the benefits and economic returns are nowhere as good as we are led to believe.
