Updates: Recent Site changes

July 29:
Feedback has been positive about the site but unfortunately (and this is all too common I'm afraid) it seems that very few people have the time or desire to make any contribution to the site. A pity, but that's the way it goes - people are happy to take information but not put anything back. On a brighter note, firstly, I found a weather forecast 'widget' to add to the pages to make it easier to see what the weather will be doing here at the 'Heads. Secondly, visitor numbers has nearly doubled since April this year which is great!

Added lots of local links to the Links page today. If you have any to add please let me know.
The site is now getting an incredible number of hits (thanks in part to Google of course but a fair number of locals have 'found' the site thanks to a recent sponsored flyer drop. The screen capture below is from the site stats and shows the last week visits (actually only 5 days as it's just been installed). Note the number of unique visits is 1242 in 5 days!Sitestats Apr08

Had to modify the registration process due to the number of spammers and 'spam-bots' attempting to register on the site. Flattering in a way as it indicates that the website is getting a lot of visitors - just a pity that some are not wanted. Hopefully the extra security will keep them at bay (and reduce the amount of work I have to do to weed them out) for a while!
Mar 20:
Updated the home page today. So many features now that I thought it best to promote them in the one spot. Now I just have to tidy up the menus and put things into logical places...
Mar18:
New article section added tonight - Videos. So many great YouTube videos, so little time. I'll put the best ones I find up for your enjoyment.
Mar 11:
I decided to remove the Odiogo feature as it seemed to cause very slow page loading at various times of the day - presumably because it's such a popular service. I'll keep checking it over the coming months and put it back if it becomes better. I have also shifted the Photo Galleries page back onto the main pages menu. Not sure what to do with the media page yet, I'll see if I get any feedback about what content people want in there.
Feb 15:
Well, despite berating myself about adding too many 'wow-factor' goodies to the site, I couldn't resist adding an amazing new feature which should be very handy for visually-impaired or learning disabled visitors. If you press the 'listen now' button which is at the top of all articles and posts on the site, you will have (if your speakers are on) the article read to you.
The computer-generated voice is very 'american' but quite understandable anyway! Let me know what you think of the feature.
Feb 13:
Added some cool 'widgets' to the site today plus began putting together the Media page with News & Views feeds from various sources.
Feb 12:
Added the Games page tonight - I found a series of 'Flash' simulations of early computer and console games and incorporated them for a bit of light entertainment. Great for kids of all ages...

The Free Classifieds are back!

Classifieds News Site related

To post a free advert here you must be a registered user on the site. Registering is easy, just click on the 'Sign-up' link to the right. Once you have received the confirmation email (this can take 24 hours), just sign in an enter your advert details. You have a single description area to place your advert.

Spammers needn't bother to attempt to register as all sign-ups are subject to confirmation. You are simply wasting your time. There is a link to the Post Your Free Ad page above every advert if you are viewing the Free Classified listings. Finally, do read the Posting Policy page.

For the adventurous - note that you can use 'tags' for emphasis in your advert. You can use the following html 'tags' - <b> for bold and <i> for italics.

For example, if I place the bold tag in front of this <b>word</b> it is shown in bold type (note that you need to close the tag '/b' after the word or phrase to stop using Bold). If you use the italic tag in front of this <i>word</i> it will display in italics. It's easy, just give it a try!

More fine tuning

Site related

Unfortunately, I had to remove the excellent GoogleMaps plug-in as it seems to be causing slow page loading. I'll leave it disabled for a while and see how things go.

I've also replaced the Random Quotes one with a text-based one that is self-hosted to reduce the page loading time - if you have any good/memorable/just plain witty quotes, let me know and I'll add them into the quote plug-in.

I'd appreciate some feedback as to how long the site takes to load on your PC (in relation to other sites I mean) and anything else that you have a problem with, or even just to tell me 'Andy.. looks great, keep up the good work!

I'm not seeking pats on the back, I'd just like to know what you honestly think of the site now and if you have any suggestions.
