As concern is spreading around the world over the swine flu outbreak, the NSW Department of Health says that currently, no cases of swine influenza have been confirmed in New South Wales or Australia, but there are around 50 suspected cases.
Of these, there are 15 suspected cases in South-Eastern Sydney and the Illawarra.
The World Health Organization has declared the swine influenza situation to be a public health event of international significance.
It is of concern because :
1. Swine influenza is derived from an animal influenza virus, which means that humans are likely to have little or no immunity to the virus.
2. There has been rapid spread to multiple communities overseas.
3. Swine influenza is affecting unusual age groups (healthy, young adults).
The swine influenza virus is thought to be sensitive to the latest antiviral drugs oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza).
