Councillor, (then Alderman) Gregory H Watson was appointed provisional Mayor until September 1980, when he was elected as Shoalhaven’s first Mayor by popular vote.
On August 14th 1879, the original timber bridge across the river at Kangaroo Valley was opened. At the time it was the highest bridge above water in NSW. It cost £3,000 and it was washed away by flood on 24th May 1898, five days after the Hampden Bridge was opened! read more…

A dog playing fetch in Germany found and delivered a live World War II hand grenade to its owner.

I’ve written here before about getting a computer club going here at the ‘Heads for the over 50’s to gain some skills and attend regular meetings and talks by invited guests. I recently emailed subscribers to my Andy’s Computer Corner newsletters to gauge interest in forming such a club.
The response has been very promising so far and so we are in the process of getting things moving.
If you are interested, please visit the Google Group page using the link below to register your interest and be a part of the process of forming the club.
Anyone who has some skills, not necessarily in computers, but possibly having some organisational skills or being involved in committees are especially welcome at this early stage as we need to quickly form a steering committee to kick things along.
William asks:If I leave steak knives in the dishwasher they go rusty quickly - how can I stop this?
Auntie Flo: Firstly William, don’t put them in there! It’s a sure way to ruin carving and steak knives that aren’t made of good quality stainless steel. Some brands do seem to tolerate dishwashers quite well, but I believe it’s best to hand wash them.
To remove rust on knives, pierce an onion with the rusty knife so it is covering the rust spots and leave it there for 24 hours. read more…
On July 5th 1879, work began on the construction of the iron bridge over the Shoalhaven River at Nowra. Amazingly (I’d like to see it happen today), the bridge was opened on the 1st August that same year by Hon John Lackey MLA, Minister for Works, in the presence of 7,000 people.
The bridge was constructed by the Edgemoor Iron Co of Delaware, USA and was the largest in NSW at the time. read more…

How can a hypnotist paralyze your hand just with words? By making a part of your brain butt in on the process that normally makes your hand move, a study says.
So the brain region that’s ready to move your hand ignores its usual inputs and listens to this interloper, which says, “Don’t even bother,” the research concluded. read more…
This is the community website for Shoalhaven Heads, a small village on the beautiful south coast of N.S.W, Australia. It is designed and maintained by Andy Turner, a local who believes 'The Heads' deserves it's own place on the web.
For each person in Australia there are two sheep and over 16 rabbits, the latter introduced in 1859 by one enterprising pommie who brought 24 wild rabbits from England in an effort to remind him of home.
