Climate change again - after this one I’ll move onto something else, I promise. I’m sure you’re sick of the whole issue and wished it would just go away or that you will just choose to (as many politicians do), wait ‘for all the facts to come in’ before making your mind up about this issue.
If you were a child of the fifties or sixties you would remember well the public interest in science, we were all keen to hear about the latest discoveries and inventions being made to alleviate diseases or advance modern living. The reality is that now, more than any time in human history, fantastic scientific achievements and discoveries are being made - and ignored.
It’s as if the attitude of many seems to be ‘just fit more tunes on my iPod I don’t care how it’s actually done’ or ‘keep studying climate change so that you come up with the answers that we want to hear rather than the facts’.
I recall an article in another blog about ‘easy answers’ and it really sums it all up and it ended with this line ‘It’s dangerous - very dangerous to accept whatever you are told by the loudest or most strident voices. The quietest, educated voices are usually the ones telling the truth.’
The effects of human activity on climate change has been actively studied since the early 90’s and the vast majority of scientists are in agreement that global warming is a serious threat, but many will just carry on ‘waiting for the facts’ or vote for political parties who pick and choose from all the science literature to find anything to ‘disprove climate change is occuring or that it’s just a natural cycle of the planet’.
Easy answers. It’s a bit like the ‘intelligent design’ faction and their laughable (if it wasn’t so serious in that generations of US school children will grow up with absolutely no idea how the earth was formed, how species evolve or in fact any conception of how important science is in our lives) - ‘God did it’ answer. Sure, God has a place in the lives of millions but leave science to the scientists and teachers to teaching and just leave religion where it belongs, in the church or the mosque.
Well, as we head towards our end of year celebrations that are in fact, pagan - it began with the feast of the Son of Isis, look it up - my only hope is that we all stop and think about how dangerous it will be if we just blindly accept the ‘easy answers’ rather than listening carefully to the debate before making up our minds based just on how an ETS or some other atempt at rescuing the planet will affect our economy.
Sure, it might not be the best answer - but doing nothing is not the solution.
Finally, if you were concerned that US politicians weren’t across the issues - we can all rest easy…
