Computer Club for locals?

Last modified on 2009-05-26 09:53:37 GMT. 0 comments. Top.

Back in Auckland I used to be involved in assisting several of the SeniorNet clubs - which are clubs for over 55s who want to get more out of their computers. The self-help nature of these clubs meant that all the members had cheap access to short courses run by more ‘PC-savy’ club members as well as support.

I would be happy to assist in setting up something similar at the ‘Heads if a group of people are interested in this idea. I am still in contact with several committee members from a couple of Auckland clubs who can provide paperwork/courses/ideas and text etc to make the process a little simpler.

For it be ‘a goer’ there would really have to be a secure venue available like a room in a club or similar so that computers could be left set up for courses etc.

If anyone is interested in the idea, please let me know firstly and I can put people in touch with each other or arrange a meeting at the club to discuss it further.

Live & Learn - About the U3A

U3aIntellectual activity, the achievement of learning something new & the stimulus of new ideas, are as important as physical activity as we age.

For the past 20 years, the Shoalhaven University of the Third Age (U3A) has played an important role in providing mental stimulation after retirement.

It offers approximately 100 Courses in a 4-term calendar year, ranging from one-off, 2 hour sessions on almost any topic, to 8 week language (French, German, Latin), watercolour painting etc. Many of the tutors are members - with a wealth of knowledge to share - but speakers from outside sources also provide valuable information on health, safety, medical, optical, legal etc. issues for seniors.

A variety of light-hearted & social Courses is also on offer, including a Lunch Club, Singing for Fun, Classical Music, Book Talk & Screening of Movie Classics.

Currently, members pay a joining fee of $1, an annual fee of $10 & are invited to attend any Course at a minimal cost of $4 for a one-off. Prospective members should not be deterred by the term “University” - there are no academic prerequisites to join - & no tests!

Proposed tourist development

Last modified on 2009-05-20 00:00:45 GMT. 4 comments. Top.

A D.A has been lodged at the council to develop the corner of Staples & McIntosh streets.

According to the application, this is what is planned:
* 24 Services Tourist Accommodation Apartments
*12 Residential Villas for Permanent Occupation
*4 Residential Apartments for Permanent Occupation
* One Restaurant/Kiosk and Surf-Hire Building
* One In-Ground Swimming Pool
*58 On-Site Car Parking Spaces and 11 Off-Site Car Parking Spaces (the off-site spaces have apparently been cancelled and all parking for the facility will now be in the planned underground car parking).
*Associated Landscaping.

It will certainly improve the eyesore that is there at the moment and the inclusion of a restaurant and cafe will be welcomed by the locals and visitors alike.

To view all the public documents including site plans, landscaping details etc concerning this, visit the council website - click on the DA Tracking link and either search for McIntosh Street, Shoalhaven Heads or enter the application number which is DA08/2782.

Now that it appears plans for the proposed marina development have been shelved, this will at least provide employment for the area and enhance the limited facilities we have at the beach.
