Decided to do a bit of tinkering this evening, as a few people had commented that the site was a little slow to load - especially on 256k ‘broadband’ connections (sorry, I don’t regard 256k as broadband regardless of what Telstra try and tell us!).

So, after optimising the images, compressing some of the javascript code (techy stuff that displays various bits of the site) and removing a few unnecessary features - like local links, I’ll put them on a separate page soon - I managed to improve things a lot. The home page should load on a 256k connection (from fresh ie: never visited the site before, subsequent visits take a lot less) in around 15 seconds. Much improved from the 25-30 seconds previously.

Unfortunately - in the process, Internet Exploder 7 now gives a message saying ‘Done but with errors on the page’. Still loads fine and no other browsers are complaining (I’ve tested Firefox, Opera and Chrome) at all, so I can’t be bothered trying to satisfy Microsoft’s rigorous (and probably incorrect) page testing! Edit 1 April: Problem now fixed.

Let me know if you are having any problems viewing the site - and please give me some feedback if you are getting faster responses on the site.

Thanks for bearing with me. As you can see the website has been ‘reincarnated’ - hope you like the new look.

I have been having doubts about continuing with this project, but decided (after the major ‘meltdown’ of the old one) to continue with it - especially since Jim Webster has come onboard. I figure I at least owe it to him to carry on with it for a while!

In the meantime I’ll add some new features in the hope of getting just a little more in the way of contribution from the community. One feature designed to make the process simpler for everybody is the new Rapid Writer page. If you have a thought for an article, just go there and write one! No need to register as a contributor - but eventually you might like to do so as well - just fill in the form and write your article.

I’ll check it over for errors and publish it within a day or two. If you would really like to include a couple of photos or images with it, just put a note on the bottom of the article and I’ll get back to you and tell you how to send them to me as an attachment.

Another new idea is the Quick Classifieds. On the right side of every page you will see the Latest Classifieds area. Just click on the ‘enter your ad’ link, fill it in and press submit. Couldn’t be easier! Note that visitors can read the entire ad by ‘mousing over’ them and as for articles, all ads are checked prior to publishing (mainly to avoid all the viagra spam…) but they will go live as quickly as I can get to it.

Thanks for your continuing support.

Thanks Rudi & Colleen says Jim Webster

Jim Webster has very kindly become a website contributor and has recently completed his first fishing club news article. Great article and he’s done very well with the photos too. Welcome aboard Jim!

Now we just need a few more locals with a bit of spare time on their hands every now and then to add their club newsletter or just tell the community what they are up to.

Shoalhaven Heads has a fair number of clubs and groups and I’m sure - in this modern age with most people having a computer - this is an ideal way to quickly get their news across.

As you may know, this site is run on a shoe string and administered entirely by one person… me, the Admin. Feedback has been received along the lines of ‘how come the coming events don’t include xxx’ (add your own event here)?

The answer is - time. I simply don’t have enough of it. I need someone locally who has a bit of time on his or her hands to help with this. Honestly, adding and editing events on this site isn’t rocket science and it would only take me an hour to tutor a complete beginner in the procedure.

So, what about it? If you believe the site is worth keeping current - then why not offer some help? I’d love to share the load!

Please remember:
1. Watching video online does eat into your monthly data allowance if you have one. Most YouTube videos are around 2-3Mb each in size, so if you view say, 5 videos then that does equate to around 10-15Mb of downloads.
2. Once you start a video playing it will continue to download even if you pause it (this helps visitors with slower speed broadband). To avoid downloading, just go to another page and it will stop the download.
3. The videos aren’t hosted on this site, they are ‘embedded’ from the YouTube page and they may be removed by YouTube (or the uploader) at any time, so if one disapears that will be the reason.
Let me know if you find a video you’d like to share too.
