Have you noticed the Daily Cartoon page yet? Dan very kindly allows not for profit sites to ‘embed’ his daily cartoons to give you a laugh.

Also, after much searching, I finally found a great events calendar plugin for the site that allows future events to be added months ahead. This means I can just put aside a morning every few months to update it for the coming events by editing the start/end dates (rather than entering every single one again manually!). Check it out here.

Starting today ‘Ask Auntie Flo’ articles will be appearing on the site with weekly household tips and tricks using more ‘old fashioned’ methods that should both save you money and help the environment.

Auntie Flo pulls out her (and her mother’s) book from the kitchen drawer to bring you old but good, common sense advice.

In today’s ‘just buy this product to save you time’ idea, we often forget that people from years ago had the same problems and could usually solve them with simple and cheap solutions.

Also, I have finished the Community Information section and added as many organisations and facilities as I could find. If you have a suggestion of something to add, please let me know by dropping me a note on the contact page.

I’m asked this question a fair bit lately : Can you send out a newsletter so we know when a new article is published on the website? The short answer to that is ‘no’ - I simply don’t have time to do this.

I had experimented with a subscription manager that allowed people to sign up to be notified - but, you guessed it, it is a huge target for site spammers, so I binned that idea.

Then it struck me. RSS. It’s built in to the site and if you use Firefox it is simple to just subscribe to the RSS feed, hold the mouse cursor over it and the latest articles are listed for you without you needing to visit the website. Simple. Of course, I reckon it’s easier to just make the site your homepage (or add it to your homepage tabs) - that way, everytime you open your browser it’s there for you! read more…

reminder

I’m trying to include as much local information on this site as I can so that it becomes a useful resource for the community, not just a novelty.

If you haven’t already done so - check out the Links page. There’s a surprising number of local websites (or sites that have pertinent local information) out there. I’ve ferreted out as many local and useful links as I can and added them to the page.

If you have some to share, there’s an easy way to recommend them - just use the Add a Link page to do so!

speedOnce in a while you find an amazing plugin that just does what it says - Javascript to Footer is one. For the non-technical readers, javascript is special code that most websites use these days. Unfortunately if a site has several of them to load, they tend to slow page loading times down dramatically because no other page elements like text or images cannot be downloaded until the scripts have finished. read more…

mosqueCouncil has approved the building of a mosque at Shoalhaven Heads. A spokesperson for the council said “this is a much-needed and welcome addition to the wider Shoalhaven as there are many Muslim people who have to travel many miles to attend services. The Christian community has been very supportive in the proposal and we thank them” read more…

yumThanks to Jim (or should we say Patricia ?) we now have a new article category - Patricia’s Best Recipes. Jim has promised to publish - no doubt after sampling each and every one to ensure the highest quality! - a new one every month for us.

We will all be looking forward with bated breath for the next culinary masterpiece.

Things are looking up. Now if we could just convince some of the other locals with an hour or so to spare a month (or more frequently if you like) to join us in getting some written by locals content up on your website for you to read and enjoy. read more…

As I mentioned in an earlier article, I’ve improved the page loading times dramatically so that should mean that previous visitors using dialup that found the site slow to use will be happier.

Recent features added:

- I’ve moved the links to a separate links page (on the page menu to the right) - if you find or know of some links to other sites that might be useful to include, let me know on the Add a Link page.

- Mystery Photo page added. If it becomes popular I’ll make it a monthly thing.

I have also considered including a forum, but before I go to the hassle - let me know via the comments if anyone would find this feature useful. Here’s an example forum to look at : Narromine Online Forums.

Finally, there are a reasonable number of visitors each month, many just stumble across it from a Google search, but there are some locals who pop in now and then. So, what about letting me and others know by adding a brief comment or two? Not too much to ask is it?
