Decided to do a bit of tinkering this evening, as a few people had commented that the site was a little slow to load - especially on 256k ‘broadband’ connections (sorry, I don’t regard 256k as broadband regardless of what Telstra try and tell us!).

So, after optimising the images, compressing some of the javascript code (techy stuff that displays various bits of the site) and removing a few unnecessary features - like local links, I’ll put them on a separate page soon - I managed to improve things a lot. The home page should load on a 256k connection (from fresh ie: never visited the site before, subsequent visits take a lot less) in around 15 seconds. Much improved from the 25-30 seconds previously.

Unfortunately - in the process, Internet Exploder 7 now gives a message saying ‘Done but with errors on the page’. Still loads fine and no other browsers are complaining (I’ve tested Firefox, Opera and Chrome) at all, so I can’t be bothered trying to satisfy Microsoft’s rigorous (and probably incorrect) page testing! Edit 1 April: Problem now fixed.

Let me know if you are having any problems viewing the site - and please give me some feedback if you are getting faster responses on the site.

The Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre is hosting a fundraising benefit for those affected by the recent Victorian Bushfires. These fires were and still are a terrible tragedy to hit Victoria, and will take many years and countless hours of work and volunteering to rebuild the communities that were lost.

In an effort to contribute what we can and raise much needed funds for this tragedy, there will be a series of concerts on Sunday 8 March throughout the day for different age groups.

The first concert starts at 10am for children and families. The second concert starts at 12pm and features four great local youth bands. Tickets for these concerts are $10 each or $25 family (2 adults, 2 kids) and can be bought on the day at the door. read more…

Thanks Rudi & Colleen says Jim Webster

Jim Webster has very kindly become a website contributor and has recently completed his first fishing club news article. Great article and he’s done very well with the photos too. Welcome aboard Jim!

Now we just need a few more locals with a bit of spare time on their hands every now and then to add their club newsletter or just tell the community what they are up to.

Shoalhaven Heads has a fair number of clubs and groups and I’m sure - in this modern age with most people having a computer - this is an ideal way to quickly get their news across.

Surfcam
I noticed that the surf club live camera has been updated recently with one that auto-pans and zooms across the whole beach. Great idea! I send the link to friends and relatives so they can see how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful spot.

Check out the links page from the menu, it’s on there.

Yes, that’s not a misprint. I just popped into my favourite local independent petrol station - Shoalhaven Ethanol Fuel at 215 Kinghorne St and they have ‘E85′ Ethanol fuel on sale at $1.05 a litre (they also had E10 Unleaded for $1.63 which compared pretty well with Friday prices in the rest of the stations in Nowra today!). Now, E85 is 85% ethanol, 15% unleaded petrol and before you throw up your hands in horror at the thought of running your vehicle on 85% (or any mixture of ethanol) - get the real facts here. read more…

Edit Aug’08 :

Has anybody else in the ‘Heads noticed an improvement in the GSM service from Telstra? We are now able to hold a conversation if we sit in the lounge of our place without calls dropping out - amazing! I can’t take any credit for this interesting development but I have heard that the NextG service power levels have been turned down a notch as it was interferring with the GSM service in some areas. Maybe the reason… read more…
