The editor has had an extended break and on his return has had to make some tough decisions about the future of this website.
I am heavily involved now with the Seniors Computer Club here at the ‘Heads and because of this and heavier workload in my business, I am unable to continue updating this website. A pity, because I have enjoyed creating and maintaining it over the years.
I would really like to see it continued by a local or locals however and so am writing this to see if there are any interested people who would like to do this.
Let’s give it a month and I will make a decision about the final fate of the site if no expressions of interest have been received after that time.
Please just use the Contact Us form to get in touch with me.
Pam asks:Cats and stray dogs are often coming around our rubbish bin Auntie Flo. Is there a way to deter them?
Auntie Flo: Give this old remedy a try Pam (yes, it’s my old favourite, vinegar again!) - put some straight vinegar in a spray bottle and liberally spray the outside of the rubbish bins with this. Remember to renew the spray after rain though! read more…
Auntie Flo has told me that she has a few more tips to share with readers, so keep an eye out for them here. She has asked me though, to ask the regulars to PLEASE help her out with some suggestions for more! Just drop me a line from the contact page and I’ll make sure she gets them.
Monday , 22 of Febuary 2010 become a very sad day in The Heads with the loss of one of our greatest characters, Jack Gazzard.
Those close to Jack know him as a cranky, cantankerous, old bugger. Those who have been lucky enough to count him as a friend also know him to have a huge heart. A man that would always stand by his mate. A man who would do anything for anyone, and even for someone he didn’t particularly like, he would do what he could to help them out. Jack was a lovable rogue and always spoke his piece, whether he be right or wrong he would staunchly stand up for his belief. You didn’t argue with Jack because it didn’t matter how right you were…you were wrong, but you couldn’t help love him anyhow. I spent many hours alone on a boat with Jack, and you find so much to talk about and the one thing I really learned ( apart from how to catch fish) was that, even though he was not an outwardly affectionate man, he so adored his three girls..Marion, Sue and Debbie. Jack worked hard and played hard and he also loved his fishing , and, although he had threatened to give it away many times, when he got the shits over something or another, it was his passion and he would always fish. He taught me so much and I feel blessed to be someone who was able to spend time with him as a mate. Even though my wife, Patricia , and myself feel a deep pain in our hearts at the moment and we can’t begin to know the pain that Jack’s wife Marion is feeling. Jack is going to be sorely missed by a great many people and none near as much as Marion and our thoughts and love are truly with her.
We had an unexpected visitor this evening at the Jerry Bailey Oval - a Navy Sea King helicopter made a landing on our local playing field to check a possible fuel leak apparently.
After checking things over (and leaving most of the crew behind to travel back to Albatross by car!) the chopper was pronounced fit to fly and took off after sunset as you can see below.
Gave the locals something to watch besides the telly (the sandflies had a feast too..) and the spectacle was enjoyed by all.
A pity they couldn’t have taken off just a little earlier as the light was getting very low for the camera to take a decent video!
Climate change again - after this one I’ll move onto something else, I promise. I’m sure you’re sick of the whole issue and wished it would just go away or that you will just choose to (as many politicians do), wait ‘for all the facts to come in’ before making your mind up about this issue.
If you were a child of the fifties or sixties you would remember well the public interest in science, we were all keen to hear about the latest discoveries and inventions being made to alleviate diseases or advance modern living. The reality is that now, more than any time in human history, fantastic scientific achievements and discoveries are being made - and ignored.
It’s as if the attitude of many seems to be ‘just fit more tunes on my iPod I don’t care how it’s actually done’ or ‘keep studying climate change so that you come up with the answers that we want to hear rather than the facts’. read more…
Following on from my last article on climate change on the south coast, I was prompted to post something in response to the events that took place today in the Liberal Party.
The replacement of the party leader by one who has made statements in past interviews like this one should be of concern to us all - (taken from an interview with Laurie Oakes):
Laurie Oakes: … can I remind you that a few days ago you visited a Victorian town of Beaufort. Let me read from the local newspaper. It says “In a wide ranging speech, Mr Abbott talked about climate change, the Liberal political fortunes and Kevin Rudd. quote - the argument on climate change is absolute crap,” he said.’ Is it absolute crap? read more…
This is the community website for Shoalhaven Heads, a small village on the beautiful south coast of N.S.W, Australia. It is designed and maintained by Andy Turner, a local who believes 'The Heads' deserves it's own place on the web.
Twenty to thirty thousand years ago, Australia was home to giant species of marsupials including a wombat the size of a rhino, meat eating kangaroos, kangaroos three metres tall and lizards 7 metres long.
