While scammers are using every available modern technology like email, the internet, text messaging etc, it seems that good old-fashioned door knocking scams are still alive and well.

From a recent media release by the council :

“Shoalhaven Water has been made aware that some customers have been telephoned by a person purporting to be a Shoalhaven Water employee and claiming that works were being undertaken in the area that may have affected the water quality, if so would they like to purchase a water filter. Similar scams have been occurring with other authorities and all residents should be cautious. All Shoalhaven Water Staff carry identification cards when working outdoors.”

Recently, the Shoalhaven council announced that it will include a provision in its draft local environment plan that would allow wind farms to be built at certain sites in the region. Under the draft plan, it will be possible to use two types of rural zoned land, RU1 and RU2, for wind farms, subject to planning approval.

Deputy Mayor Gareth Ward says this provision gives the council the power to decide where it is appropriate to site wind farms. read more…

Wow, doesn’t it throw you when you enter a search in the Google box and you get a Page Load Error or similar message?

Firstly, you assume that your internet connection has gone down the gurgler but then when the Shoalhaven Heads website comes up good as gold - all is well!

I was more worried that Gmail might also be off the air again (it doesn’t happen very often but when it does (and you use Gmail accounts exclusively) it’s a oh-oh situation. But, no Gmail is fine as I expect Google to be again soon.

If you are really, really desparate you could try another search engine like Yahoo!, Answers.com or (God forbid) Live Search!

Edit 9:30AM: Gmail access is a problem from a browser but if you use Outlook Express or similar it’s currently working.
Edit 10:30AM: Whew! All back again now - wonder whether it will be on the news tonight…

I’m asked this question a fair bit lately : Can you send out a newsletter so we know when a new article is published on the website? The short answer to that is ‘no’ - I simply don’t have time to do this.

I had experimented with a subscription manager that allowed people to sign up to be notified - but, you guessed it, it is a huge target for site spammers, so I binned that idea.

Then it struck me. RSS. It’s built in to the site and if you use Firefox it is simple to just subscribe to the RSS feed, hold the mouse cursor over it and the latest articles are listed for you without you needing to visit the website. Simple. Of course, I reckon it’s easier to just make the site your homepage (or add it to your homepage tabs) - that way, everytime you open your browser it’s there for you! read more…

The ABC reported last week that the Shoalhaven council says it is delighted to finalise an agreement to sell land for the development of a Buddhist temple and tourist complex. Plans were stalled in January when the council failed to receive an expected payment.

The Shaolin Temple Foundation has entered into a three-year mortgage agreement to buy the Comberton Grange land from the council. The foundation is undertaking environmental assessment requirements for the proposal, which still needs New South Wales Government approval.
