The editor has had an extended break and on his return has had to make some tough decisions about the future of this website.sadface

I am heavily involved now with the Seniors Computer Club here at the ‘Heads and because of this and heavier workload in my business, I am unable to continue updating this website. A pity, because I have enjoyed creating and maintaining it over the years.

I would really like to see it continued by a local or locals however and so am writing this to see if there are any interested people who would like to do this.

Let’s give it a month and I will make a decision about the final fate of the site if no expressions of interest have been received after that time.

Please just use the Contact Us form to get in touch with me.

Andy.

unhappysantaClimate change again - after this one I’ll move onto something else, I promise. I’m sure you’re sick of the whole issue and wished it would just go away or that you will just choose to (as many politicians do), wait ‘for all the facts to come in’ before making your mind up about this issue.

If you were a child of the fifties or sixties you would remember well the public interest in science, we were all keen to hear about the latest discoveries and inventions being made to alleviate diseases or advance modern living. The reality is that now, more than any time in human history, fantastic scientific achievements and discoveries are being made - and ignored.

It’s as if the attitude of many seems to be ‘just fit more tunes on my iPod I don’t care how it’s actually done’ or ‘keep studying climate change so that you come up with the answers that we want to hear rather than the facts’. read more…

climatechangeFollowing on from my last article on climate change on the south coast, I was prompted to post something in response to the events that took place today in the Liberal Party.

The replacement of the party leader by one who has made statements in past interviews like this one should be of concern to us all - (taken from an interview with Laurie Oakes):

Laurie Oakes: … can I remind you that a few days ago you visited a Victorian town of Beaufort. Let me read from the local newspaper.  It says “In a wide ranging speech, Mr Abbott talked about climate change, the Liberal political fortunes and Kevin Rudd. quote - the argument on climate change is absolute crap,” he said.’ Is it absolute crap? read more…

Apparently (I didn’t hear it myself) there was a chap who had called the ABC this morning implying that Shoalhaven Heads was identified as being one of the most prone areas when climate changes occur. He went on to state that he had ‘heard’ that people who live there were faced with huge home insurance premiums!

I don’t know about the second rumour - I strongly doubt it has any truth to it at all apart from the usual annual insurance premium rises we all are used to - but the second can be put to rest if you read the Draft Sea Level Rise Policy released by the council. read more…

Live trials are nearly complete on the filter technology which will allow the government of the day to add any ‘unwanted’ site to a secret blacklist. This isn’t China, Saudi Arabia or Iran - we could see a mandatory filter of all internet traffic right here in Australia as early as this year.

The Government could yet put the internet filter where it belongs: in the bin. But that will only happen if politicians feel the heat in their home electorates. Why not add your support to the campaign and sign the petition (you can use the secure box below to do so) to get this draconian legislation stopped before it’s too late. It could really spell the end of the internet as we know it - it’s that serious. For more information, visit the GetUp! Campaign website.

Well, not quite - but have you popped down to see the amount of sand that’s been scoured from the beach yet?

My guess it was during the very high tides on 23rd & 24th of this month (both were over 2 metres). It will be interesting to see what happens if we get a king tide and high river levels during winter this year as the gap between the river and the sea is getting to within a few metres now at high tide! Here’s some photos - read more…

I just finished reading the article on the cover of the latest Heads News about the proposed project to build a boardwalk here - by the way, doesn’t Anne-Louise do a great job with the community newsletter?

I had to chuckle because my wife and I went for a stroll the other day and we were musing on whether a scheme will ever be proposed to provide some work for the unemployed that meant visitors and locals (especially those in  wheelchairs) would have better access to the beach. We reckoned it would compliment the plans to demolish the old cottages and build the new tourist & residential accommodation development on McIntosh St. read more…

After watching TV coverage of the devastating floods in northern NSW recently, it’s worth reminding local residents that Shoalhaven Heads has a long history of flooding. Since 1860 there have been 41 floods recorded, many of them serious.

From the SES Floodsafe Guide : ‘Flooding may close roads and inundate homes and businesses.

Wharf Rd, Hay Ave, Jerry Bailey Rd and Berrys Bay are the first areas to be flooded. read more…
