Bruce asks: I’ve heard that the best method to clean glass is to use newspaper - how do I do this Auntie Flo?
Auntie Flo: These days, microfibre cloths are very popular for glass cleaning, but I find that it can still be difficult to get rid of smearing and streaks on the glass.
Using newspaper usually gives great results and here’s why. Newspapers are good at cleaning glass because the paper leaves very little lint behind. Compared to paper towels, newsprint is much more rigid and hence the fibres don’t separate. It is important that only ordinary newspaper should be used as other papers often contain minerals like silica which can scratch glass. read more…
Jenny asks: Is there a natural alternative to fabric softeners as while our towels are softer they don’t dry us very well?
Auntie Flo: Over using fabric softener can make towels less absorbent. Much of the harshness of clothing and towels is because of either hard water or detergent residue. If you do use fabric softener, don’t use it every time you wash. read more…
Fiona asks: How can I clean lime and scale buildup from the taps and porcelain bathroom basin? I’ve tried the usual cleaners and orange-based sprays but nothing seems to shift it.
Auntie Flo: This is actually quite a simple job - there are scale/lime cleaners available but I prefer not to use chemicals myself so this is the method I use.
Mix 1/2 cup white vinegar with 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice (use the real thing) and apply to the marked area with either read more…
Jenny asks: Is there any way to stop my jewellery tarnishing in my jewellery box?
Auntie Flo: I’ve been doing this for years Jenny - place a piece of white chalk in your jewellery box to absorb moisture and help prevent tarnishing of silverware and jewellery.

Jean asks: Do you have a recipe that I can make up to clear blocked drains?
Auntie Flo: Mother’s Drain ‘De-Clogger’ recipe: 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup vinegar. Pour baking soda down the drain first then follow with the vinegar. Put the plug in the drain and let it sit until bubbling has stopped then follow with a bucket of hot boiling water. Works for me!

Tom asks: Is there a natural (and cheaper!) recipe that I can make up as an alternative to household cleaners?
Auntie Flo: Try this All-Purpose Cleaner recipe my mother used to swear by: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda into 2 litres of water. Store in a spray bottle and use for removing water marks and scum on shower screens, bathroom taps, windows, bathroom mirrors, etc.

Sally asks: How can I clean our stainless steel kettle and toaster?
We’ve used proprietary stainless steel cleaners but they often won’t clean badly marked areas.
Auntie Flo: To clean smudge marks off stainless steel appliances, make up a paste of Baking (bicarbonate) of soda with water and rub over the spots. Then wipe off with clean water & dry. To maintain a nice streak free finish, try Windex on a paper towel.

Starting today ‘Ask Auntie Flo’ articles will be appearing on the site with weekly household tips and tricks using more ‘old fashioned’ methods that should both save you money and help the environment.
Auntie Flo pulls out her (and her mother’s) book from the kitchen drawer to bring you old but good, common sense advice.
In today’s ‘just buy this product to save you time’ idea, we often forget that people from years ago had the same problems and could usually solve them with simple and cheap solutions.
Also, I have finished the Community Information section and added as many organisations and facilities as I could find. If you have a suggestion of something to add, please let me know by dropping me a note on the contact page.
