Intelligent Design?

Information Local Issues Videos

I just finished reading the Rev Bird's article in our local newsletter where he cites the book Darwin on Trial and seems to be a proponent of Intelligent Design (I think, I'm not sure exactly what point he was trying to make, but he does mention 'the accomplishments of intelligent design' in the article).

I have quite different views on the subject of religion and this isn't the place to discuss or promote them as I've always believed 'each to his own' and providing that believers stick to quoting the bible (or whichever holy book they claim to be written by their particular god) and not pretending to discuss 'pseudo science', then I don't have a problem at all.

Most 'family church goers' and the vast majority of mainstream christians are as appalled at the I.D nonsense as non-believers are.  There's no conflict in most christian's believing in their religion and also understanding and accepting that natural selection and evolution are the cornerstone of our understanding of how life came to be on the planet. Many don't accept that the original 'spark of life' could also have come about by purely natural means - they believe in a supernatural event at the very beginning. Again, I don't have a problem with them believing that either. Science has yet to fully explain the phenomenon - but science may be getting close.

Intelligent Design however is a new (well, new to mainstream religions anyway) evangelical belief that the way the earth came about was exactly as described in the bible. The planet was apparently created around 6000 years ago and dinosaurs and man were frolicking around together at the same time...

Proponents of the 'theory' - which used to be called 'creation science' - frequently attempt to use old books and studies to discredit Darwin's theories and modern evolutionary biology. They do this because they don't have one shred of evidence to support their so-called theory. They frequently use the word 'theory' as if evolution and natural selection are 'crackpot ideas dreamt up by anti-christians'. No, sorry a scientific theory is a proposition used to explain the state of the natural world based on evidence and reasoning by people who want answers to their questions. Such theories are debated, discussed and criticised by their peers. This has been done (and is still being done) for decades - but as yet, no other theory can explain the world in as much detail and accuracy as Darwin's original brilliant idea. That's just the fact of the matter.

'Darwin on Trial' is one such book. Darwin on Trial has been reviewed by, among other people, a practicing lawyer by the name of Thomas C. Sager. In his review, Sager makes some very interesting points about the legal profession which he and Johnson share. He puts it succinctly: 'The job of a lawyer is not to find the truth, (that is the job of the judge or jury) but to defend (or prosecute) the client.... The standard is to vigorously argue on behalf of one's client, rather than to pursue an abstract 'truth' or even 'justice'.' Sager goes on to note: 'In supporting the client, the lawyer may use any ethical means available. It is perfectly ethical for a lawyer to make ad hominem attacks on the opposing witnesses, to present incomplete information to a jury, to bring in irrelevant data, and of course to use a wide panoply of rhetorical skills and tricks. Science, obviously, has different goals. But the lawyer's orientation should be kept in mind when analyzing Johnson's book, because he is a lawyer, he has titled his subject a trial, he pursues it as a trial, and his job is to prosecute Darwinism. Lots of things are 'fair', from his point of view.'

Another reviewer states 'Almost every scientific source cited by Johnson had been misused or distorted, in ways ranging from simple misinterpretations and innuendos to the construction of what appears to be outright fiction. The more closely I examined Darwin on Trial, the more inaccuracies I found, until it became almost impossible to catalogue all of the misleading statements in Johnson's work. This book-upon which the 'intelligent design' movement is trying to hang a program of social reform and public education - is perhaps the ugliest and most deceptive book I have ever seen.'

Darwin's book and his theories have been refined and improved upon in the decades since they were first published. Claims that Darwin 'admits he could not point to any impressive examples of natural selection in action' or that 'transitional fossils don't exist' or even that 'bananas are a wonderful example of how god made fruit perfectly suited for human use' are just plain silly childish nonsense.

Transitional fossils have been found and continue to be found every year, the human genome project and evolutionary biology has reinforced and made even clearer how natural selection has changed our species as it has all species - and as far as bananas go - if you have seen what bananas looked like when 'god made them' you would hardly recognise them! Selective breeding by growers has turned a butt-ugly, tasteless fruit into what we have today. But - that doesn't stop believers trying to tell children otherwise. The video is good for a laugh anyway - and I'm embarrassed to say that Ray Comfort is from New Zealand:

This video is still on the Way of the Master website (skip the intro - click on Icon 2, Intelligent Design vs Evolution, then watch the 'Atheism' video. It's still in there) Even though the video has been panned by atheist's and christian's alike and he had admitted that it was a 'mistake' in his blog. Funnily enough, he seems to blame atheists for making out that he believes that modern bananas were made by god, but sorry - video doesn't lie Ray...

Moderators / Editors needed urgently!

Local Issues Site related

As you may know, this site is run on a shoe string and administered entirely by one person... me, the Admin. Feedback has been received along the lines of 'how come the coming events don't include xxx' (add your own event here)?

The answer is - time. I simply don't have enough of it. I need someone locally who has a bit of time on his or her hands to help with this. Honestly, adding and editing events on this site isn't rocket science and it would only take me an hour to tutor a complete beginner in the procedure.

So, what about it? If you believe the site is worth keeping current - then why not offer some help? I'd love to share the load!

Surfcam
I noticed that the surf club live camera has been updated recently with one that auto-pans and zooms across the whole beach. Great idea! I send the link to friends and relatives so they can see how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful spot.

Check out the links page from the menu, it's on there.

Updates: Recent Site changes

News Site related

July 29:
Feedback has been positive about the site but unfortunately (and this is all too common I'm afraid) it seems that very few people have the time or desire to make any contribution to the site. A pity, but that's the way it goes - people are happy to take information but not put anything back. On a brighter note, firstly, I found a weather forecast 'widget' to add to the pages to make it easier to see what the weather will be doing here at the 'Heads. Secondly, visitor numbers has nearly doubled since April this year which is great!

Apr 22:
Added lots of local links to the Links page today. If you have any to add please let me know.
The site is now getting an incredible number of hits (thanks in part to Google of course but a fair number of locals have 'found' the site thanks to a recent sponsored flyer drop. The screen capture below is from the site stats and shows the last week visits (actually only 5 days as it's just been installed). Note the number of unique visits is 1242 in 5 days!Sitestats Apr08

Apr 03:
Had to modify the registration process due to the number of spammers and 'spam-bots' attempting to register on the site. Flattering in a way as it indicates that the website is getting a lot of visitors - just a pity that some are not wanted. Hopefully the extra security will keep them at bay (and reduce the amount of work I have to do to weed them out) for a while!
Mar 20:
Updated the home page today. So many features now that I thought it best to promote them in the one spot. Now I just have to tidy up the menus and put things into logical places...
Mar18:
New article section added tonight - Videos. So many great YouTube videos, so little time. I'll put the best ones I find up for your enjoyment.
Mar 11:
I decided to remove the Odiogo feature as it seemed to cause very slow page loading at various times of the day - presumably because it's such a popular service. I'll keep checking it over the coming months and put it back if it becomes better. I have also shifted the Photo Galleries page back onto the main pages menu. Not sure what to do with the media page yet, I'll see if I get any feedback about what content people want in there.
Feb 15:
Well, despite berating myself about adding too many 'wow-factor' goodies to the site, I couldn't resist adding an amazing new feature which should be very handy for visually-impaired or learning disabled visitors. If you press the 'listen now' button which is at the top of all articles and posts on the site, you will have (if your speakers are on) the article read to you.
The computer-generated voice is very 'american' but quite understandable anyway! Let me know what you think of the feature.
Feb 13:
Added some cool 'widgets' to the site today plus began putting together the Media page with News & Views feeds from various sources.
Feb 12:
Added the Games page tonight - I found a series of 'Flash' simulations of early computer and console games and incorporated them for a bit of light entertainment. Great for kids of all ages...

Petrol at $1.05 a litre in 2008?

Local Issues News

Yes, that's not a misprint. I just popped into my favourite local independent petrol station - Shoalhaven Ethanol Fuel
at 215 Kinghorne St and they have 'E85' Ethanol fuel on sale at $1.05 a litre (they also had E10 Unleaded for $1.63 which compared pretty well with Friday prices in the rest of the stations in Nowra today!). Now, E85 is 85% ethanol, 15% unleaded petrol and before you throw up your hands in horror at the thought of running your vehicle on 85% (or any mixture of ethanol) - get the real facts here.

The catch? Well you will need to get your vehicle fitted with a bi-fuel converter, which apparently will be a lot cheaper than an LPG conversion - around $400 depending on your engine. This clever device 'knows' when you are running on the higher octane E85 and adjusts the engine management system accordingly. The fantastic advantage of this is that if E85 isn't available when you fill up, no problem!

Currently E85 is not available in many towns in NSW - closest ones to us are at Albion Park and one in Nowra at the moment, but it will apparently be available nationwide soon.

As well as the substantial price advantage, the higher 105 octane means that your engine has more power and runs cooler - so what's the disadvantages? None that I can see and anything that reduces this countries dependence on offshore oil has to be a good thing.
