Fiona asks: How can I clean lime and scale buildup from the taps and porcelain bathroom basin? I’ve tried the usual cleaners and orange-based sprays but nothing seems to shift it.

Auntie Flo: This is actually quite a simple job - there are scale/lime cleaners available but I prefer not to use chemicals myself so this is the method I use.

Mix 1/2 cup white vinegar with 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice (use the real thing) and apply to the marked area with either an absorbent cloth or a paper towel so that the cleaning solution stays in contact with the marked area - porcelain or chrome - for a few minutes. Then using the cloth or paper towel simply rub the area until it is removed, then rinse all the area very well with clean water.

You might need to repeat for old or really heavy buildup but it works! Be careful using any kind of acid (which vinegar and lemon juice is of course) on marble or other surfaces without checking with the manufacturer first.
