About Shoalhaven Heads

Local Issues

Located at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach, at the mouth of the Shoalhaven River, Shoalhaven Heads, which started life as a collection of fishing shacks, is a picturesque and popular retirement and resort haven.

There are two National Parks nearby - Seven Mile Beach National park, which is the home of many native birds and animals - and Comerong Island Nature Reserve.

Where is Shoalhaven Heads?Visitors to the Heads can enjoy a picnic or barbeque down by the river, fish from the wharf or from the beach or cool off at the local pool which has good facilities for all ages.

Close enough to Sydney (around 150 km) for a day or weekend visit, the village offers a wide choice of accommodation in caravan parks, flats and B&B's, cottages, cabins and a motel.

There are fish to be caught in the river and ocean, while the surf here is some of the best on the south coast for both body and board surfers, all year around. The local surf life saving club provides beach patrols in the main holiday season.

The golf course has 15 excellent and challenging holes currently, and is being extended to 18 holes, tennis courts are available for hire and there is a great Bowling & Recreation Club.

Nearby is the historic Coolangatta Estate, established in 1822 by Alexander Berry and built by convict labour.

The Shoalhaven Coast was officially declared a new wine region in 2002 and the emerging boutique wineries between Kiama and Durras are producing award-winning wines of excellence. Many of these wineries are only a short drive from Shoalhaven Heads.

The area has a number of unique and distinctly different towns and villages including Berry, Kangaroo Valley and Milton.
